Scriveners' originally known as the 'Collective Writers' was formed as result of the activities of 'The Collective', a body set up at Abergavenny, Wales, for the purpose of publishing new or little published writers. The Collective also organizes public poetry readings and it was from poets invited to take part in these readings that the writer's group was formed, calling itself  'The Collective Writers.' In order to distinguish itself from the parent body this group was later reformed  taking the new name of 'Scriveners,' under the leadership of the poet Jeff Nuttal.

The stated function of 'Scriveners' is to provide constructive criticism, help, advice and guidance to its membership of aspiring and published writers. Members meet every other Wednesday evening  where their work is made the subject of collective scrutiny and discussion.

Membership is open to anyone with a genuine interest in the writing of both prose and poetry who pay an annual membership fee of thirty pounds.  All members receive a mail out of work in progress which forms the basis for discussion at  forthnightly meetings held at the Hen and Chickens Public House, Flannel Street,  Abergavenny ( every other Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.)  Scriveners also organises public performances by members of their work.
